Riassunto
Fino al 1994, anno della scoperta della Grotta Chauvet in Ardèche, la presenza di immagini di felini nell’arte paleolitica era esigua. In cinquant’anni di ricerca si era definito un bestiario piuttosto consolidato, e le analisi statistiche sembravano perentorie: da un lato una massiccia presenza di bovidi e cavalli, dall’altro una sparuta costellazione di animali detti ‘pericolosi’, in particolare mammuth, rinoceronti, orsi e appunto felini.

Fino al 1994, anno della scoperta della Grotta Chauvet in Ardèche, la presenza di immagini di felini nell’arte paleolitica era esigua. In cinquant’anni di ricerca si era definito un bestiario piuttosto consolidato, e le analisi statistiche sembravano perentorie: da un lato una massiccia presenza di bovidi e cavalli, dall’altro una sparuta costellazione di animali detti ‘pericolosi’, in particolare mammuth, rinoceronti, orsi e appunto felini.
Si era anche osservato che questi animali occupavano nelle grotte ornate una posizione marginale. Marginale nello spazio, e cioè erano graffiti o dipinti in luoghi per lo più nascosti, in genere in cunicoli, pozzi o sul fondo della cavità, e marginale nel tempo, perché sembravano piuttosto delle emergenze sporadiche, senza alcuna continuità.
Con la Grotta Chauvet che, fino a nuova scoperta, ci ha consegnato le più antiche immagini mai realizzate dall’uomo (32.000 anni fa), il quadro statistico può dirsi rivoluzionato: qui felini, rinoceronti e orsi costituiscono la stragrande maggioranza delle immagini. Conseguenza: le teorie interpretative sono state riviste, e oggi si è d’accordo nell’ammettere che non sempre l’associazione bisonte-cavallo ha avuto un valore simbolico centrale. In epoca più antica, anzi, l’immaginario dell’uomo sembra essersi concentrato su altri animali, e tra questi il felino deve aver svolto un ruolo cruciale. Quale fosse questo ruolo non è chiaro. Il mio contributo è un sondaggio preliminare.
Facciamo un passo indietro, molto prima dell’arte e dell’Homo sapiens. Negli anni Ottanta del Novecento, un paleontologo sudafricano, Bob Brain, ha ricostruito una pagina fondamentale del passato dei nostri progenitori. Studiando certi accumuli d’ossa risalenti a 2.500.000 di anni fa, ha potuto ribaltare una teoria che li interpretava come ammassi di rifiuti di Australopitechi.
Tra le ossa erano rappresentati quasi tutti gli animali della savana ma, elemento inquietante, c’erano in maggioranza crani di babbuini, solo i crani e, cosa ancora più inquietante, c’era anche qualche cranio di Australopiteco. Come il resto delle ossa, i crani degli Australopitechi recavano tracce di morte violenta, e da qui a formulare teorie di cannibalismo e culto delle teste il passo era stato breve.
Bob Brain, invece, con pazienza, e come una sorta medico legale della preistoria, ha dimostrato che i cumuli d’ossa erano piuttosto il resto dei pasti di un grande felino. Studiando il comportamento dei felini attuali, il loro modo di uccidere le prede, di trasportarle, di mangiarle, ha compreso che il carnefice non era un ominide, ma il Dinofelis, un cugino minore della tigre dai denti a sciabola, un cacciatore robusto e micidiale, di taglia intermedia tra il leopardo e il leone.
La cosa interessante è che pare che il Dinofelis fosse specializzato nella caccia dei primati, in questo modo si spiega la massiccia presenza di crani di babbuini e di ominidi nei suoi rifiuti, umani e babbuini che un felino riesce a mangiare interamente ad eccezione della testa. In altre parole, conclude Brain, circa 2.500.000 di anni fa, l’antenato dell’uomo ha vissuto in un ecosistema a rischio, cacciato da un antagonista biologico che ha messo addirittura in crisi la sopravvivenza della specie.
Solo l’arrivo dell’Homo abilis, con la tecnologia del fuoco e dell’utensile in pietra scheggiata, ha potuto dare una svolta alla storia dell’uomo sulla terra. Il Dinofelis è stato sconfitto e l’uomo ha conquistato il vertice della piramide biologica.
Ora, il salto da 2.500.000 di anni fa al Paleolitico Superiore è enorme, e nulla, in una prospettiva rigorosamente scientifica, può giustificare una connessione. L’unico ponte che testimonia un legame tra l’uomo e il felino in una fase anteriore all’arte paleolitica è una sepoltura neanderthaliana in cui, presso un personaggio di rango, sono state trovate le ossa delle zampe e le vertebre della coda di un grosso felino.
Probabilmente si trattava di una pelle gettata sulle spalle dell’inumato, come si vede ad esempio nell’iconografia classica degli stregoni africani. Per il momento, però, possiamo conservare l’immagine del Dinofelis come metafora dell’evidente ossessione dell’uomo per il felino, un’ossessione che ha marcato moltissime culture tribali, che ha sempre accompagnato la cultura occidentale dall’Antichità al Medioevo a oggi, e che continua a popolare, tra fascino e angoscia, il nostro immaginario e i nostri sogni.
Non è forse casuale, allora, che la più antica arte abbia sepolto in una grotta la più terribile carica di felini mai dipinta dall’uomo. Un vortice di linee rabbiose ed eleganti che scaturiscono con violenza centrifuga da un punto vuoto, forse un foro nel diaframma di pietra che tiene a bada le energie ctonie, forse l’aleph insondabile, o un vaso di Pandora, come sembra suggerire l’immaginoso apocalisse di Leonardo.
L’arte paleolitica è una potente chiave di lettura per cominciare uno scavo di quello che con ogni evidenza sembra un archetipo radicato nel nostro inconscio, e questo perché già nel Paleolitico il felino era rappresentato in modo problematico. Al contrario di altri animali, per cui la rappresentazione naturalistica era la norma, col felino entriamo in un terreno ambiguo, e la grotta Chauvet ci offre le immagini più eloquenti di questa ambiguità.
Un esperto di felini attuali, osservando i leoni senza criniera dipinti nella grotta, ha sottolineato che colui che li fece aveva una conoscenza diretta ed esatta dell’animale, secondo il suo parere, cioè, aveva dovuto osservare degli esemplari vivida molto vicino. Lo testimoniano i dettagli anatomici, le posizioni di quiete o di corsa riprodotte alla perfezione, e addirittura le diverse espressioni del muso.
Proprio le espressioni del muso, però, hanno colpito gli studiosi d’arte, perché nella grotta Chauvet i profili dei felini passano da un massimo di realismo in certi animali ad autentiche ‘caricature’ in altri: in certi casi la fisionomia della testa sembra assumere espressioni facciali quasi umane.
È noto che le rappresentazioni di umani nel Paleolitico sono piuttosto rare e approssimative, come se di fronte a tanta capacità di rappresentazione realistica degli animali ci fosse una difficoltà tecnica, o psicologica, o religiosa che impediva di ritrarre l’uomo in modo chiaro. Profili, volti, corpi somigliano piuttosto a fantasmi indistinti o, in altri casi, scivolano nell’animale, creando ibridi in cui umanità e ferinità si mescolano in un modo che non può non avere avuto un significato profondo.
La cosa interessante è che se molti leoni di Chauvet si avvicinano a fisionomie umane, esistono anche molte rappresentazioni umane che si avvicinano a rappresentazioni leonine. Ma come spiegare questa convergenza in un modo che vada al di là delle interpretazioni sciamaniche o genericamente magiche? La confusione uomo-animale, la metamorfosi, il partecipare di due nature in un solo corpo è un motivo troppo generico per aiutare nella ricerca, e soprattutto non dice nulla di nuovo sulla relazione concettuale tra l’uomo e il felino. Esistono però alcune opere d’arte delle origini che danno qualche indizio.
Fino alla scoperta della Grotta Chauvet, l’immagine più antica mai prodotta dall’uomo era una statuetta in avorio di mammuth raffigurante un umano ritratto in piedi e con testa leonina. Si tratta della statuetta di Höhlestein-Stadel (Bade-Wurtemberg), datata a circa 30.000 anni fa (Fig. 1). Le interpretazioni di questo artefatto sono varie. Alcuni sostengono che si tratta di uno stregone che indossa una pelle di leone, altri pensano a una reale metamorfosi dall’animale all’uomo, o viceversa.
Quello che conta notare, però, è che la relazione uomo-felino non è solo suggerita, come nei casi precedenti, ma prende una forma unitaria, il che ci pone di fronte a una concettualità che non si riduce alla somma di due nature, ma evoca una terza entità, un campo semantico ulteriore, un luogo mentale in cui umano e felino si incontrano, vivono una relazione, quasi una simbiosi.
La seconda opera è la più antica immagine prodotta dall’uomo sul continente africano. Rinvenuta nella grotta denominata Apollo 11, in Sud Africa, è un ciottolo dipinto con pigmento nero, datato a circa 26.000 anni fa. La figura di base è un felino, ma le zampe posteriori sono due gambe certamente umane, probabilmente aggiunte a posteriori. Sempre aggiunte a posterioni sono due corna sulla testa dell’animale, e un segno nel ventre che indica verosimilmente il fallo. Ancora una volta cioè troviamo l’unione umano-felino, ma in più si aggiungono attributi bovini e maschili. L’intervento sull’immagine originaria va dunque nella direzione dell’elemento umano, di un secondo elemento animale e della sessualità.
La terza opera viene dalla grotta Chauvet, ed è databile a circa 30.000 anni fa. La cosa straordinaria è che ritroviamo tutti gli elementi elencati sopra, ma racchiusi in un’icona tripartita che sembra sciogliere qualche ombra. Utilizzando una stalattite, di chiara valenza fallica, l’artista ha dipinto in nero una cosiddetta Venere, con un triangolo pubico ben marcato e inciso verticalmente, e cosce arrotondate che terminano a punta, senza piedi, secondo la tradizionale iconografica delle statuette paleolitiche aurignaziane e gravettiane.
Si può infatti confrontare questo artefatto con le note Veneri di Savignano o di Laussel. La differenza qui è che la Venere appare come il ‘ritocco’ di un’emergenza naturale preesistente: la forma calcarea può aver suggerito all’artista una somiglianza tra stalattite e statuaria ‘classica’.
Aggiunta in un secondo tempo, abbiamo una figura bovina in posizione innaturale, cioè in piedi, il che ci permette di collegarla immediatamente ad altri esempi simili denominati tradizionalmente ‘stregoni’, di chiara simbologia maschile. Da notare l’ambiguità di lettura dell’immagine, con una ‘conflittualità di contorni’ che permette di leggere la coscia sinistra della venere come la coscia sinistra dell’uomo-bisonte, o viceversa. Il fenomeno, diffusissimo nell’arte paleolitica, indica un legame intimo, un sincretismo.
Per ultimo, poi, quasi a incorniciare e a saldare a livello iconografico il principio maschile e quello femminile, abbiamo il proflilo di un felino, la cui linea dorsale prosegue in quella dell’uomo-bisonte, mentre quella della zampa anteriore continua nel bordo della stalattite, chiudendo circolarmente l’insieme. Appena abbozzata abbiamo la silouhette di un secondo felino.
Come nel caso della placchetta sudafricana, si riconoscono varie fasi di esecuzione, ma che sia intercorso poco o molto tempo tra la prima e l’ultima fase, resta fermo il fatto che l’associazione ha prodotto un tutto unico il cui significato non può sfuggire. Esiste una connessione necessaria tra il felino e il principio maschile-femminile, come se fosse il felino a favorire il sincretismo tra i due sessi.
Quello che emerge da questa analisi e dalle precedenti immagini di felini umanizzati o di umani felinizzati, è che il felino incarnava un principio dualistico, ambiguo, proteiforme, forse ermafrodita, comunque connesso alla sfera sessuale e a una sessualità che poteva riassumere l’unità degli opposti. Tutte le tradizioni successive mostrano il felino come indistintamente associato alla sessualità maschile o femminile. Dei e dee in forme leonine hanno mascherato nell’immaginario dei popoli pulsioni e paure sessuali sepolte nell’inconscio.
Un quarto artefatto, simile ai precedenti ma che introduce un nuovo elemento, è un graffito ritrovato al Riparo Tagliente, nel Veronese, databile a circa 11.000 anni fa. Si tratta della sepoltura di un giovane uomo tra i 22 e i 23 anni. Le ossa degli arti inferiori erano state ricoperte con pietre di varie dimensioni, due delle quali, le più grandi, posate non casualmente sui femori, presentavano superfici graffite rivolte verso il basso, e cioè in modo da aderire al corpo del defunto. In una di esse è forse riconoscibile un segno vulvare, nella più grande c’è il graffito di uno stupendo leone delle caverne, la cui schiena è sovrastata da grandi corna di bos primigenius.
Da notare che la testa del felino era originariamente rivolta verso i genitali del defunto. Ecco allora che ritroviamo l’associazione felino-bovide, come in Apollo 11 e Chauvet, e una connessione non casuale con la sfera sessuale. Quello che c’è di nuovo è che il tutto si trova in una sepoltura, quindi l’insieme iconografico è associato alla morte. Forse le pietre servivano a impedire che il defunto si rialzasse, che tornasse tra i vivi, e come guardiano abbiamo un felino che ne minaccia il pube.
Ora, tra 32.000 anni fa in Francia, 30.000 anni fa in Germania, 26.000 anni fa in Africa e 11.000 anni fa in Italia corrono distanze spaziali e temporali che impediscono ogni reale connessione. Ma quello che stupisce in questa libera comparazione è che troviamo già nel Paleolitico alcuni dei campi semantici tradizionalmente legati al felino nelle culture successive, in particolare l’ambiguità dualistica, la sessualità e la morte. Il legame tra morte e sessualità è bene illustrato da certe culture africane. Presso alcune tribù si temeva che vedere un leone potesse ridurre l’uomo all’impotenza sessuale.
Presso i Magussaua la circoncisione, che introduceva alla maturità sociale e sessuale, veniva praticata da un uomo mascherato da leone o da leopardo, che azzannava simbolicamente i genitali dell’iniziando. Presso gli Adamaua lo stregone che circoncideva il ragazzo indossava una maschera di leopardo, e presso i Tschamba gli strumenti utilizzati per questa operazione erano contenuti in una sacca ricavata dalla zampa di un felino. L’iniziazione alla sessualità, attraverso la morte simbolica del rito di passaggio, era dunque strettamente connessa al felino, che sì uccideva, ma anche richiamava alla vita, e incarnava così il classico dualismo di morte e rinascita.
Un’altra incisione paleolitica pare simbolizzare proprio questo rituale, e il rapporto tra il felino del Riparo Tagliente e il corpo dell’inumato sembra rientrare in questa dimensione simbolica. Il felino ne minaccia i genitali ma, di fronte alla morte reale, come già nella morte iniziatica, poteva essere il tramite verso un’altra vita. Il felino dunque come divoratore dei genitali ma anche come animale psicopompo.
Ora, l’accostamento del felino a un passaggio tra i mondi (dei vivi e dei morti, dell’infanzia e dell’età adulta) sembra caratterizzare molte culture: nella tomba dei Tori di Tarquinia la pantera, anche per gli Etruschi associata a Dioniso, è di colore blu, perchè Dioniso, oltre che dio dell’estate e della fertilità, è anche dio dell’aldilà, e il colore blu o azzurro della pantera rimanda proprio alla dimensione ultraterrena e invisibile del dio.
Più tardi Macrobio ci ricorda che Crono, il dio con la falce che castra il tempo, era detto in Oriente Deus leontocefalus, come la statuetta paleolitica di Höhlestein-Stadel. In molte culture, dall’Africa all’America Latina, ritorna il felino come animale maestro di iniziazione, animale che uccide, divora, e porta alla rinascita. In Grecia la pantera è appunto connessa a Dioniso, dio smembrato e rigenerato. Presso gli Egizi il leone era connesso al sole, forse, secondo alcune interpretazioni, per la caratteristica luminosità degli occhi del felino di notte, o forse per un’idea di rinascita dopo la morte notturna.
Mitra, dio solare, è spesso rappresentato con testa leonina e a volte è ritratto in atto di uccidere il toro sacro lunare (che la connessione felino-bovide del Paleolitico incarni questa opposizione-unità tra principio solare e principio lunare, tra luce e buio, tra vita e morte?). Per gli Assiro-Babilonesi il leone era simbolo di disordine e tenebra, e in India la tigre era connessa a Shiva, dio distruttore e assieme rinnovatore…
Si potrebbero seguire all’infinito le fila di queste suggestioni, dai riti sciamanici dell’America Latina, ai bestiari medioevali fino alla cinematografia recente, col Bacio della pantera di Paul Schrader, ma il rischio è quello di smarrirsi in un pulviscolo interpretativo che fa perdere di vista lo scopo iniziale della ricerca: qual è l’archetipo che il felino della preistoria incarna e al tempo stesso traveste? Angoscia di castrazione, come direbbe Freud, o massa di libido incestuosa, come diceva Jung a proposito del più celebre ibrido umano-felino, la Sfinge? Forse tornare al Dinofelis e all’etologia felina può ricentrare la questione ai suoi termini base.
Bob Brain, nei suoi studi sul comportamento dei felini, aveva raccolto una notizia inquietante, che poi verificò di persona. Sui fianchi di una montagna africana di origine vulcanica viveva una colonia di babbuini. Durante le ore di buio questi si riparavano dal freddo notturno entrando nelle grotte laviche che foravano la montagna. Tuttavia nelle grotte abitava anche un leopardo, che non doveva fare altro che scegliere una preda quando ne aveva voglia.
I babbuini, paradossalmente, avevano accettato la presenza dello scomodo coinquilino e, nonostante il pericolo certo, non rinunciavano al rifugio. Era come se un’inerzia e un’indifferenza assurde incollassero i babbuini a quel luogo di morte. Brain ripetè l’esperimento, e si nascose in un’altra grotta, questa volta senza leopardo. Calata la notte, dal fondo, cominciò a strepitare all’improvviso, a imitare il ruggito di un felino, ma nonostante confusione, urla e parossismo nel gruppo, nessuno dei babbuini fuggì.
Altri resoconti ci parlano dei felini mangiatori di uomini. Si tratta generalmente di esemplari maschi in età avanzata che trovano nell’umano una preda relativamente facile e che poi, visto il sapore della carne, lo preferiscono a ogni altro animale specializzandosi nella caccia all’uomo.
I racconti dei pochi sopravvissuti all’attacco di un grosso felino, tra cui lo stesso Livingstone, riferiscono che il contatto fisico con il predatore avviene in condizioni simili a un sogno ad occhi aperti, in uno stato di deprivazione sensoriale quasi piacevole. L’uomo non reagisce, e il cervello anestetizza il corpo, si instaura cioè una complicità tra preda e predatore perché tutto finisca il più rapidamente possibile.
La proverbiale silenziosità del felino durante la caccia, il suo apparire ubiquo, le sue rumorose, ripetute e violente manifestazioni sessuali, hanno certo colpito l’immaginario di ogni tempo. Il fatto che i felini di taglia superiore comincino a smembrare la preda dalle parti più molli, in genere proprio dai genitali, ci fa capire molte cose sulle pratiche iniziatiche africane. In altre occasioni, certe posture del felino appaiono estremamente umane, e nessun altro animale, tranne le grandi scimmie, assomiglia maggiormente all’uomo nella taglia e nella muscolatura, e così via.
Basterebbe anche solo studiare la fascinazione della gente di fronte alla gabbia dei leoni, e raccoglierne i commenti, che invariabilmente vanno dall’ammirazione per la loro bellezza, alla curiosità morbosa su come sarebbe venire mangiati da loro. Desiderio di essere predati?
Bob Brain ha ritratto una pre-umanità di cacciati, non di cacciatori. Il primo uomo davvero tale, l’Homo abilis, ribaltò la situazione, e così facendo inaugurò la nostra specificità: una specie tecnicamente forte ma biologicamente debole, un dualismo tra vulnerabilità e sopraffazione che ha marcato le storie individuali e collettive dell’umanità. Il felino va all’uomo perché non ha consapevolezza delle sue armi, e perché al contrario sa perfettamente di avere di fronte una preda priva di zoccoli per scalciare, denti per mordere, artigli per lacerare. E l’uomo perché va al felino? Bruce Chatwin, toccato dagli studi di Brain, parlava di nostalgia.
Una volta scomparso il Dinofelis ci è venuto a mancare l’Avversario, il Principe delle Tenebre, e per questo, eliminatolo fisicamente, lo abbiamo tenuto con noi interiorizzandolo, chiamandolo con molti nomi diversi a seconda delle varie mitologie, o incarnandolo nel nemico di turno… Un’ipotesi altamente suggestiva e altamente indimostrabile.
Forse, però, il fascino che sentiamo per il felino ci parla di una mancanza che non è solo mancanza di attributi come la forza, l’eleganza, l’agilità, o l’istinto ferocemente necessario che vediamo espressi così bene in un leopardo. Forse avvertiamo la mancanza di un mondo in cui l’Altro era un animale in carne ed ossa, e non, tragicamente, un fantasma interiore o, peggio, uno di noi.
Inoltre, nonostante Homo abbia sconfitto Felis molto anticamente, pare si sia trattato di una sconfitta parziale. L’uomo come specie non era più minacciato, ma il felino continuava ad essere competitivo nella caccia agli erbivori. Da antagonista biologico passò dunque a concorrente alimentare. Con l’arrivo di Homo sapiens, intorno a 50.000 anni fa, molti grandi felini si estinsero, un’estinzione in massa che è indice non tanto di uno spegnersi progressivo, ma più probabilmente di una caccia accanita e sistematica. Sembra che il loro sterminio sia diventato a un certo momento una priorità assoluta.
Nei miti Olmechi, i giaguari sterminarono la prima popolazione umana del mondo e, per scongiurarne la collera, si venerava un dio specifico, il bambino-giaguaro, metà umano e metà felino, a cui si sacrificavano bambini. Si suppone che tale cerimoniale fosse il riflesso capovolto di una grande caccia rituale su vasta scala condotta contro i felini in fase pre-Olmeca. In altri termini, la lotta senza qurtiere ai felini deve aver provocato un trauma profondo nei gruppi di Cacciatori Arcaici, vuoi per un senso di colpa, vuoi per paura di subire una vendetta.
Gli Inca solevano sottrarre i cuccioli ai giaguari, e una femmina di giaguaro cui siano stati tolti i piccoli diventa furiosamente vendicativa…
Le tracce culturali del rapporto uomo-felino parlano tanto di un archetipo dell’inconscio collettivo, quanto di una volontà di rimozione. Il felino disturba l’individuo e disturba il gruppo: freudiano il primo, junghiano il secondo?
Troppo banale. Forse la grande caccia al felino, reale e simbolica, è il riflesso della volontà di non portare a piena emersione l’archetipo, è la paura del vaso di Pandora, che può bruciare il singolo come la specie.
Come individui ci confrontiamo con la paura di un ritorno violento e incontrollato dell’inconscio, e come gruppo tendiamo a respingere un principio irrazionale e caotico che mette in seria discussione le basi normative del gruppo.
Si può anche pensare che la caccia al felino abbia potuto funzionare come affermazione di un potere biologico e simbolico. La caccia rituale al leone presso i Masai è indispensabile per accedere alla condizione adulta, e in moltissime culture è strettamente connessa all’affermazione di sovranità. Le guerre che caratterizzano il Neolitico sono forse una prosecuzione di quelle ai grandi carnivori del Paleolitico.
Venendo a mancare questi, l’uomo ha cominciato ad accanirsi sull’uomo, riversando sui propri simili un eccesso di energie di autodifesa e sopraffazione. Non è improbabile che il felino, per empatia, risvegli una duplice tenebra, il sentimento ambiguo di una paura di violenza: violenza mortale o violenza sessuale, violenza che si subisce o violenza che si fa subire.
Mettendo assieme alcune analisi sulle più antiche testimonianze del rapporto tra uomo e felino nella preistoria e, dall’altro lato, alcune osservazioni etologiche sui felini attuali, si può notare che questa relazione si è riprodotta nella storia dell’uomo secondo schemi piuttosto ripetitivi. Non esistono elementi per parlare di continuità culturale, ma una certa impressione di universalità ci è data dal fatto che, biologicamente parlando, la natura del felino, e anche la natura umana, sono cambiate relativamente poco negli ultimi 40.000 anni.
Il felino, evidentemente, smuove certe parti sepolte nel nostro profondo, parti che riconosciamo in lui o perché ci assomigliano, o perché ci mancano, facendoci sentire imperfetti. Di fronte al felino proviamo un terrorre ipnotico, seduttivo, che instaura una connivenza ambigua, un gioco di attrazione e morte in cui ci sentiamo sensualmente perdenti, voluttuosamente dominati. Altre volte vorremmo essere come lui, magari proprio per dominare a nostra volta. Il Dinofelis doveva rappresentare tutte queste cose in modo perfetto, perché era il nostro perfetto antagonista, fatto su misura per noi, l’unico con cui dovessimo fare seriamente i conti come specie.
Come i babbuini della caverna africana, anche oggi non facciamo che aspettare il nostro turno, con la stessa provvidenziale indifferenza che ci impedisce di pensare ogni istante alla certezza della nostra morte. Ma il felino è uscito materialmente dalle nostre vite, e ne abbiamo cercato il fantasma in qualcosa che ci assomiglia di più, si tratti di un angelo decaduto o di un terrorista islamico. La cosa è molto pericolosa, perché senza un animale-guida rinunciamo a confrontarci simbolicamente con la nostra mente irriflessiva. Neghiamo energie irrazionali, selvatiche, caotiche, che poi scoppieranno più tardi in piccole o grandi ecatombi.
Proprio nella Mesopotamia in cui oggi si gioca la guerra del petrolio sorgeva il magnifico palazzo di Assurbanipal. Uno dei bassorilievi sopravvissuti ci illustra la Grande Caccia del Re. Orgoglioso, il sovrano si erge sul suo carro come un cacciatore bianco su una jeep, e brandisce il bell’arco come si imbraccia un Remington. Il Presidente-Cacciatore sta uccidendo leoni, grandi leoni maschi, muscolose leonesse, che giacciono trafitte al suolo come tanti san Sebastiano.
Il sangue cola a fiumi… Cosa vuol dire? Siamo all’epoca delle città-stato, delle città-granaio, della terra squadrata e misurata. Proviamo a guardare quante volte il felino è stato ucciso. Nella Mesopotamia delle città geometriche, nella Grecia della neonata ragione che scaccia Dioniso, nell’Europa cristiana dei gatti arsi con le streghe, negli zoo, nei mercati cinesi in cui si vende ancora pene di tigre per illudere maschi impotenti… O la legge o il selvatico, o la città o il bosco, o l’ordine o il caos. Ma è l’aut aut la vera menzogna, siamo schiavi del pensiero dialettico solo da poche centinaia di anni, e il misterioso pendente della Grotta Chauvet ci mostra altri modi possibili della mente.
Il felino che racchiude e sigilla l’unione tra la fertilità femminile e l’esuberanza maschile, come il cerchio che racchiude lo Yin e lo Yang, è il campo in cui i due opposti coabitano, un campo che non porta a una sintesi identitaria, soprattutto un campo che resta pericoloso, poco rassicurante, necessariamente instabile.
In Cina lo Yin è l’essenza del principio femminile ed è simboleggiato da una tigre. La dea della fertilità Kuan Yin è rappresentata a cavallo di una tigre. In Egitto Sekhmet era la dea leontocefala della guerra, e Bastet dalla testa di gatta univa al calore solare le passioni ardenti. In India, Durga, la Madre Terribile, cavalca un leone. In Grecia la dea della fecondità Cibele viaggiava su un carro trainato da leoni.
La scandinava Freya, dea della terra, della libertà e della passione violenta viaggia su un carro trainato da gatti. E il gatto era consacrato ad Artemide. Nel sogno il leone è indice di forze selvagge, indomite, maschili e penetranti, uno spiritus mercurialis, per dirla con Jung, indice di pulsioni sessuali incontrollate, e si potrebbe continuare.
Quello che forse conta trattenere dall’icona della Grotta Chauvet, invece, è che solo nella rinuncia del razionale, nel dialogo con l’istintuale, si possono conciliare gli opposti. In ogni caso, il nostro rapporto col felino ci parla da sempre del difficile gioco con l’alterità, un’alterità che ora ci attrae ora ci spaventa. Censurando il felino, il selvatico, uccidendolo senza sostituirlo con qualcosa di altrettanto potente (che in fin dei conti non esiste), si rischia di cadere nell’unica vera tenebra, la mancanza di scelta.
