L’ELEFANTE DELLA SILA GRANDE (CALABRIA). SCHERZO DELLA NATURA O SCOPERTA ARCHEOLOGICA?

Una particolarissima roccia solleva degli interrogativi riguardo attitudini preistoriche ancora insospettate. Quella che sembra una scultura ha forme e misure praticamente simili a quelle dei Mammuth. L’autore segnala la roccia e sollecita studi in proposito.

[nggallery id=55]Se non è un falso fatto con il black and decker, è forse una scoperta archeologica di valenza internazionale. Trattasi di una singolarissima conformazione rocciosa sita ai confini della Sila Grande, nel territorio di Campana (CS), composta da due grandi blocchi, distanti tra loro circa tre metri, costituiti da diversi strati di roccia in sovrapposizione, probabilmente scolpiti (Fig. 1). La prima figura è un elefante alto circa 5 metri, splendidamente scolpito (Figg. 2/4). La seconda è di interpretazione più difficile, ma forse rappresenta due gambe umane fino alle ginocchia, poi la statua si interrompe poiché mutilata della sua parte superiore (Fig. 5). I blocchi mancanti sono in parte andati perduti, in parte giacciono sul terreno circostante a qualche decina di metri di distanza.

Sotto le due figure nel blocco di roccia sottostante sono state scavate due piccole grotte, testimonianza forse di una civiltà cavernicola.
Le due statue sono lì da secoli, all’aperto in una radura assolata, i contadini del luogo se le ricordano da sempre. L’emozione è forte di fronte ai due colossi e presto lascia il campo agli interrogativi: chi li ha scolpiti? E quando? Sono una testimonianza millenaria di una straordinaria civiltà preistorica della Calabria, o un falso medievale o giù di lì?

Analizziamole un po’ meglio. La roccia delle sculture mostra i segni della corrosione del tempo e delle intemperie, in alcuni tratti le statue sono state consunte, e molti sono i particolari mutilati o mancanti, un po’ come accade in genere per le statue greche o romane dell’antichità. L’elefante è bellissimo, imponente e dinamico allo stesso tempo. Con le zampe posteriori in una flessione ponderale che lo fa sembrare in movimento. Gli occhi, laproboscide e le zanne sono molto ben marcati, indubbiamente l’opera di un grande artista. La cosa strana (tra le altre) è che l’elefante non rappresenta un esemplare africano o indiano, poiché le zanne sono scolpite diritte verso il basso, caratteristica questa dell’Elephans Antiquus, loro progenitore diretto estintosi alla fine del Pleistocene, circa 12.000 anni fa!

Provo a misurare una zanna e seppur mutilata essa raggiunge la lunghezza di 180 centimetri. Completa sarebbe lunga circa 220 cm, esattamente la lunghezza delle zanne fossili di Elephans Antiquus, ritrovato nel rione Archi di Reggio Calabria, alcuni anni fa. Dietro la zanna c’è un’altra protuberanza cilindrica mutilata che si protende verso il basso, e dà l’impressione della gamba di un uomo a cavallo dell’animale, ma la statua nella sua parte alta è incompleta.

Ancora più colossale la figura della seconda statua, poiché se quelle che sembrano due gambe umane dalle ginocchia in giù raggiungono quasi i sei metri di altezza, vi lascio immaginare quanto alta sarebbe stata la figura intera. Alcuni blocchi di roccia caduti dalla sommità dei colossi (non tutti purtroppo) giacciono sul pianoro circostante a poca distanza dalle statue, e forse sarebbe possibile riconoscerne la collocazione nella posizione originale!

Gli elefanti sono scomparsi dalla Calabria da molte migliaia di anni, la sola testimonianza di un passaggio in questi luoghi in epoca storica lo abbiamo con transito delle armate di Annibale, nel 200 a. C., circa. Come mai queste statue colossali rappresentano l’elefante e non il grande bisonte o il grande orso, animali sicuramente più diffusi nelle selve europee, come testimoniano numerose altre rappresentazioni rupestri? Se tali giganti fossero opera umana, saremmo di fronte alla scultura preistorica più grande d’Europa.
